Well I've returned from my first fill. On clear liquids for 48 hours then move up the chain again.
Stats
Consultation Date: 11/14/16
Surgery Date: 12/1/16
Official starting weight on 11/14/16: 242 lbs
Official starting BMI on 11/14/16: 44.3
Official weight lost: 16 lbs
Official current weight : 226 lbs
The weight I started with was the weight they recorded at the hospital the morning of surgery which was higher. Lets face it, Thanksgiving was after consultation and before surgery. I was enjoying the last holiday meal before surgery, so my weight was higher at surgery time. I'll just have to remember to keep track of what I'm recording and the Official numbers.
But overall, he said I was doing good considering my height. He recommends the gastric sleeve for those at my height due to metabolic reasons, but went with the lap band because of my actual weight. The weight loss/risk ratio justified his choice of using the lap band.
So, overall, I'm happy. But I'm sick of broth. I want food again, but I understand the reasoning and I'd rather be safe than sorry for a few days.
I'll try to update again in a few days when I'm off broth. My mood should improve by then, lol.

Tomorrow - 1st fill......
Well, tomorrow is my first fill. I feel like I've been eating like a pig lately. That being said, I'm now down 19.6 lbs. Current weight is 225.2. I feel better than I've felt in a long time and I know it is only going to get better.
The only aggravation is my back and my foot. After I get the OK from Doc, I'm going to see about working on my core. That should help my back. My muscles aren't strong enough anymore to keep my spine from jiggling around all over the place.
The other problem, my foot. I suspect plantar fasciitis. Makes walking miserable. I'm going to check out the pool this week. That should be a blessing on my foot and give me some exercise. I do need to get a brace or see a doctor about it, but I feel like such a whiner. But on the flip side, get all these problems taken care of so my weight loss can be as hassle free as possible.
Since the end of year holidays are over and everyone is returning to normal schedules, I guess I need to make a few appointments. When spring rolls around, I want to be able to hit the outdoors running (so to speak)!
Well, I'm going to try to get my excitement and nervousness under control for tomorrow. I'll update again after my first fill.
Here we go!

One Month Post-Banding
Stats Before Surgery:
Age: 41
Height: 5' 3.5"
Weight: 244.8 lbs (depending on which scales I use)
BMI: 43.4 (Morbidly Obese)
Goal: 124.8 lbs (tenative, have not discussed with my Dr. yet)
Banding Date: December 1, 2016
First Fill Scheduled for: January 17, 2017
These are pictures of me in early November during the cruise my sister and I took before my surgery. She is the one in pink and 2 years post lapband (she really didn't want to take pictures that day, lol).
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Well, it has been one month and four days since my surgery. I've decided to create a diary of my experience mainly for myself. When things get tough, I want to be able to look back and see where I was and how far I've come. I also decided that I may be able to put someone at ease knowing that they aren't alone in what they are feeling or experiencing.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Fortunately, I had good resources in the decision making process and what to expect. My father had a Gastric Bypass 13 years ago. My sister had the Lapband 2 years ago. I chose the lapband for a few reasons.
1. It was reversible should anything ever go wrong.
2. It was safer than Gastric Bypass
3. I've seen my father's lifestyle changes vs my sister's lifestyle changes (I preferred hers).
4. The results may be slower, but it seems healthier and my anatomy isn't being removed.
On the morning of surgery, my sister went with me and was giving me the low-down on what to expect and teasing me too (her way of putting me at ease, which I really did appreciate). After surgery I was in recovery and felt horrible. They warned me about the shoulder pain I would feel from the gas they used to blow up my insides. It was expected, but it hurt. My sister was surprised at how long they made me walk around before allowing us to go home, but it helped with the pain, so I didn't argue.
I knew I wouldn't be returning to work the next day, so I had my sister drive me to the office to pick up a few things that I could work on over the weekend if I felt up to it. That was probably a mistake LOL. Boss asked me to do a thing or two before I left. My sister was not happy and let him know about it (we both work in the same office). I was still groggy from the anesthesia, but I remembered he letting him have it. Well, after the anesthesia wore off, I realized that she really didn't let him have it, she just reminded him that I was still groggy and didn't need to be working. Amazing how you see things under anesthesia.....
She dropped me off at Dad's and went to pick up my Rx. I alternated between napping and walking. I was sooooo thirsty. I didn't have any trouble making myself drink water or broth. It was like a hangover from hell. My sister came back to Dad's and proceeded to complain at how I was dealing with post-surgery. She didn't fare so well. She was nauseated and so sleepy. I think she slept for two days after her surgery and I was walking the farm with my baby sister while she checked horses.
The first week on liquids was about to kill me. After I was finally able to quench my thirst, it was all I could do not to eat anything I wasn't supposed to. Well, I did cheat some. I would sneak a goldfish cracker, chew it up real good and take a sip of broth to moisten it up and wash it down (hey, it was like a clear flavored soup by the time I swallowed it). If my sister or Dad caught me, they kept telling me I would regret that bite. I never did :)
Our meeting one week after surgery was a relief. There were several that were one week out that were having the same struggles I was. Some worse and some better than me. And it did make me feel good that I had lost 8 lbs at weigh in, but it was a rough way to do it.
With all the mention of writing down what filled me up and what didn't, I decided to look for an app that would track my weight but didn't have a bunch of junk in the app that I didn't want. I finally found BMI and Weight Loss Tracker (Fit Slip is what it says on my home screen). I really like it. It helps track weight, BMI, Body Fat, and tells you what BMI range you are in by color coding.
It has a statistics page letting you know the total you have lost, your starting weight and your current weight and how much further until your goal weight. It also helps you establish a healthy goal weight. I haven't discussed a goal with my Dr. yet, but I plan to at my first fill.
Finally at day 14 post-op, I was able to eat soft foods. I stopped at Sonic on my way to work, got a Jr. Breakfast burrito and a medium unsweet tea. I got to work, settled in at my desk, plopped that burrito on a paper plate, opened it up and nibbled at the eggs. It was the BEST BREAKFAST OF MY LIFE!
I was a little skittish of eating too much too quick. I certainly didn't want to mess anything up before I healed and I certainly didn't want to vomit (I hate vomiting, I'll stay sick just not to vomit, I'm not one to throw up to feel better). But I finally worked myself up to more solid foods just in time for Christmas. I was surprised at what my plate looked like this year vs the many Christmases of the past. My cousins, Aunts and Uncles noticed my plate was sparse as well. They put two and two together and realized I had done the surgery. My aunt stepped right in and started questioning me lol. She had Gastric By pass done in the early 90's. It was nice that they were happy for me making the decision to get healthy again, but it was embarrassing too. These are also the people that were lined up at the window at Thanksgiving when I was 16 when my boyfriend gave me a kiss before he went home. My nosy family. Lol. I love them!
New Years Day
Weight: 227.6 lbs
Loss: 17.2 lbs
BMI: 39.7 (No longer morbidly obese!)
Mood: Shocked and happy. Is this really happening? I'm losing weight!
My sister had told me to expect to put on most of the weight I had taken off during the liquid diet phase once I started solid foods before my first fill. I haven't. I've only lost. I did come to a stop at Christmas and put on a few lbs, but once the feast leftovers were gone, I started losing again. I hope it continues.
New Years day was also my first big mistake. Gardettos.... I love Gardettos, but they are too dry and I ate them too fast. They balled up and wouldn't go down. I ended up walking. Still wouldn't go down. My mouth was getting slimy. My throat felt like it was full of foam under the wad of Gardettos. Finally leaning over the sink, up it came. It wasn't like the heaving feeling of throwing up I remembered from past times. I just opened my mouth and out it came. No heave. I remember feeling relived that I don't think I ripped anything loose. Well lesson learned. Avoid Gardettos. If I don't, go very very slowly with them!
